As a world leader in aging research, Dr. Guarente has been revealing the relationship between aging and sirtuins and producing more than 190 scientific papers. He has also mentored many great scientists who are now leading authorities in many different institutions. Dr. Imai has also been fascinated with aging science for more than 20 years and recently trying to understand the systemic regulation of aging and longevity through his concept of the NAD World. Drs. Guarente and Imai have made a phenomenal discovery of sirtuins’ NAD-dependent deacetylase activity in 2000, which has opened a new arena of aging research.
In this interview, Drs. Guarente and Imai talk about the history of their aging science and sirtuin research, important connections between sirtuins and brain function, and their visions of next ten years of sirtuin biology.
